Risk Warning on Trading HK Stocks

Despite Hong Kong's robust legal and regulatory framework, its stock market still faces unique risks and challenges, such as currency fluctuations due to the Hong Kong dollar's peg to the US dollar and the impact of mainland China's policy changes and economic conditions on Hong Kong stocks.

HK Stock Trading Fees and Taxation

Trading costs in the Hong Kong stock market include transaction fees, stamp duty, settlement charges, and currency conversion fees for foreign investors. Additionally, taxes may apply based on local regulations.

HK Non-Essential Consumer Goods Industry

The Hong Kong stock market encompasses non-essential consumption sectors like automotive, education, tourism, catering, and apparel. Of the 643 listed companies, 35% are mainland Chinese, making up 65% of the total market capitalization. Thus, it's heavily influenced by the Chinese economy.

HK Real Estate Industry

In recent years, the real estate and construction sector's share in the Hong Kong stock index has notably decreased. Nevertheless, as of 2022, it retains around 10% market share, covering real estate development, construction engineering, investment, and property management.

      Fundamentals
On July 15, the Bank of Canada kept its policy rate unchanged at 2.25%. The meeting minutes released subsequently revealed that the Governing Council believes the Canadian economy, after experiencing near-stagnation from the first quarter of 2025 through the first quarter of 2026, showed signs of recovery in the second quarter of 2026. Although uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariff policies, negotiations related to the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and ongoing tensions in the Middle East continue to weigh on business and consumer confidence, the Canadian economy is gradually adapting to trade policy and geopolitical shocks. The drivers of economic growth are also expanding from a previous reliance primarily on consumption and government spending to include exports and business investment.
U.S. economic growth slowed somewhat in the second quarter, but domestic demand remained relatively resilient. Preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce show that second-quarter GDP grew at an annualized rate of 1.5%, down from 2.1% in the first quarter and below market expectations. A widening trade deficit, continued inventory drawdowns, and reduced government spending collectively weighed on economic growth, with the trade deficit dragging down GDP by approximately 1.01 percentage points—the largest negative factor since the first quarter of 2025.
      Technical Analysis
On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are widening downward, and the moving averages are diverging downward, indicating that the short-term downtrend remains intact. The RSI stands at 36, indicating the market has entered oversold territory. On the daily chart, the Bollinger Bands are narrowing, moving averages have flattened, and following a MACD death cross, the fast and slow lines have retraced to near the 0-axis, suggesting a potential reversal at any time. With the RSI at 45, market sentiment is predominantly bearish. However, as prices continue to consolidate near the 50-period EMA, a rebound is highly likely; the recommended strategy is to buy on dips.
