Risk Warning on Trading HK Stocks

Despite Hong Kong's robust legal and regulatory framework, its stock market still faces unique risks and challenges, such as currency fluctuations due to the Hong Kong dollar's peg to the US dollar and the impact of mainland China's policy changes and economic conditions on Hong Kong stocks.

HK Stock Trading Fees and Taxation

Trading costs in the Hong Kong stock market include transaction fees, stamp duty, settlement charges, and currency conversion fees for foreign investors. Additionally, taxes may apply based on local regulations.

HK Non-Essential Consumer Goods Industry

The Hong Kong stock market encompasses non-essential consumption sectors like automotive, education, tourism, catering, and apparel. Of the 643 listed companies, 35% are mainland Chinese, making up 65% of the total market capitalization. Thus, it's heavily influenced by the Chinese economy.

HK Real Estate Industry

In recent years, the real estate and construction sector's share in the Hong Kong stock index has notably decreased. Nevertheless, as of 2022, it retains around 10% market share, covering real estate development, construction engineering, investment, and property management.

Zelenskiy Slams Europe's Hesitation in Davos Speech

      King Ten
      Russia-Ukraine ConflictPoliticalRemarks of Officials
      Summary:

Zelenskiy at Davos criticized Europe's indecision on Russia, urging unified action amid shifting global focus.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy delivered a sharp critique of European allies at the World Economic Forum in Davos, accusing them of failing to take decisive action against Russia as his country faces relentless missile and drone attacks on its critical infrastructure.

Speaking on Thursday, Zelenskiy expressed visible anger over what he described as a lack of political will from Europe to counter Vladimir Putin, particularly as Ukraine endures devastating strikes on its water, heating, and power networks during freezing winter conditions.

      A Rebuke of European Inaction

Zelenskiy argued that while diplomatic efforts continue, Europe's response has been defined by hesitation. He pointed to several key failures, including an inability to stop Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers and a reluctance to seize frozen Russian assets.

"Europe loves to discuss the future but avoids taking action today," Zelenskiy told the audience, questioning the continent's resolve to act as a global power, especially as US attention may be shifting. "Where is the line of leaders who are ready to act?"

His blunt message was delivered after a last-minute meeting in Davos with US President Donald Trump, who described their conversation as "good" and expressed hope for an end to the war. Following this, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are scheduled to travel to Moscow for talks with Putin.

      Frustration Over Weapons and Sanctions

Zelenskiy detailed specific areas where he believes Europe is falling short, from economic pressure to military support. He noted that while a 20-point peace plan is nearly finalized after months of negotiations on security guarantees and reconstruction, the immediate need for advanced weaponry remains critical.

He voiced frustration over the resistance to providing Ukraine with long-range missiles capable of deep strikes into Russian territory.

"Here, in Europe, we're advised not to mention Tomahawks to the Americans – not to spoil the mood," Zelenskiy said. "We're told not to bring up Taurus missiles."

While grateful for the financial aid that helps purchase mostly US-made weapons, he questioned the logic of the approach. "Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just cut Russia off from the components it needs for missile production?" he asked. "Or even destroy the factories making them?"

Zelenskiy also contrasted the effectiveness of US sanctions with those from Europe, suggesting the continent's need for consensus among its leaders slows down decision-making and weakens its impact. "There are endless internal arguments and things left unsaid that stop Europe from uniting and speaking honestly enough to find real solutions," he said.

A Call for European Leadership in a New Era

The Ukrainian president's comments come as Europe provides the majority of financial assistance to Ukraine following Trump's return to the presidency last year.

Zelenskiy used a recent diplomatic episode involving Trump's territorial claims on Greenland—which was defused after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte—as an example of Europe's flawed strategy.

"Instead of taking the lead in defending freedom worldwide, especially when America's focus shifts elsewhere – Europe looks lost, trying to convince the US president to change," he warned. "But he won't change."

He urged the continent to abandon its fragmented identity and embrace a more powerful, unified role on the global stage.

"We should not accept that Europe is just a salad of small and middle powers, seasoned with enemies of Europe," Zelenskiy stated. "When Ukraine is with you, no one will wipe their feet on you. And you will always have a way to act – and act in time."
